SUCCESS STORY
M.A.M.Abdul Cader & Co, (Pte) Ltd., is a family concern in the business of
processing bovine and ovine, hides and skins in a fully developed
Tannery with mixture of modern technology and traditional tanning
methods which are still demanded by European buyers.
The story of this Company dates back to 1913, when Mr. M.A.M.Abdul
Cader a pioneer in the processing of bovine and ovine hides and
skins established a tannery for this purpose under his name as a
proprietorship in Buthgamuwa Road, Welikada, Rajagiriya. His son
Al Haj M.S.A.Razack who converted the business into a partnership
with his wife continued the business after his death. Mr. Razack
later acquired ownership of the land under the management of his
second son Ashroff Razack.
After his death Mr. Ashroff Razack who was active in the business at
that time took over the day-to-day running of the business. The
business was then converted into a Limited Liability Company in
1988, and was responsible for the liberalisation of the Leather
Industry
The factory and office is situated on 234 perches of land in
Buthgamuwa approximately five and half miles from Colombo and
within the official capital of Sri Lanka Sri Jayawardenapura Kotte.
The office comprises an area of 1,360 Square feet and a factory
processing area of over 12,000 square feet. Other infrastructure
facilities available are adequate supply of electricity, abundance
of spring water, a chrome recovery plant (for environmental
protection) recently commissioned under UNDP sponsorship and
guidance. A facility for the beam house operations the traditional
tanning process is also located approximately one km away from the
above property for the purpose of bark tanning done in pits by
manual labour, as demanded by our foreign buyers.
The total staff consists of approximately 65 in
number and has been with the Company for many years. The labour
staff is mostly semi skilled and the recipes processing into
different types of leather are still guarded secrets known only to
trusted factory managers and the Managing Director. Two factory
Managers run the day-to-day operations of the factory and have
been with the Company for over twenty years. The Directors
continue to be hand on with the process and along with the
managers have been trained through experience and also abroad and
in house training in the art of tanning and leather manufacture by
foreign expertise.
Mr. Ashroff Razack has been abreast with the times and brought in
modern and current technology and methods to meet the pressing
demands of the fast moving leather industry in the clothing and
fashion world. Gearing 70% of its finished leather to the
international markets the Company is conscious of the high quality
standards it has to maintain.
MAM exports 90% of their vegetable tan leather. 60% of the Finished
Chrome Leather, Leather Garments and Products are exported to St.
Michael’s, Mark & Spencer of U.K. through BOI Companies who
have sub contracted from them. The balance 40% is sold in the
local market and 60% of this is supplied to reputed local shoe
manufacturer
also specialise in many Leather Products and the latest Leather
Hats, Jean Belts that have a very good demand in U.S.A. & Europe.
